Forensic Computer Incident Analysis

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The use of computer forensics is becoming an increasingly common feature within many criminal investigations. With an ever increasing number of digital devices available on the market, various incidents and information stored on these products can now be analysed playing a vital role in bringing an alleged criminal to justice. CCL Forensics are at the forefront of such forensics, by using the latest tools and techniques to track digital activity of possible offenders, locate deleted files and ultimately uncover any potential evidence.

With many offices, homes and businesses having at least one computer on the premises, those committing criminal acts may be inclined to try and store vital information or even commit a crime via their computer. We have a strong and successful background in uncovering evidence of computer misuse which can then be produced and presented in court proceedings.

Finding and retrieving data that the owner deleted is a delicate procedure that should only be undertaken by trained professionals such as our expert analysts here at CCL Forensics. Such evidence is often volatile and needs to be dealt with care in order to protect its integrity and avoid any damage, so it is in a suitable condition to be used at a later date.

This level of forensic investigation can help to highlight incidents in fraud cases, examples of identity theft and possible money laundering along with many more. We are determined to do our utmost within whichever sector our investigation falls and once any evidence has been located, we can offer an expert witness in court to discuss our findings.

Forensically analysing evidence has always played a key role in criminal investigations however with developments in technology, analysing incidents on computers has been the subject of rapid growth in recent years. We at CCL Forensics works in state-of-the-art, fully secured labs that are equipped with all of the latest computer forensics technology, to give us the best chance of finding any evidence that may be available.

Finding and retrieving data that the owner thought they had deleted is a delicate procedure that should only be undertaken by at team of trained professionals and expert analysts. This is due to the fact that this level of evidence is often volatile and needs to be treated with care in order to protect its integrity and avoid any damage so it is in its original  condition to be used at a later date.
Computers don’t delete data; they just remove the reference to that particular file which therefore makes a wide variety of potentially damming evidence potentially retrievable – unless it has been overwritten by subsequent operations. All deleted data recovery is completed using validated forensic techniques which have no effect over the current media and removes the risk of disputes over the validity of the evidence if a case reaches court.

Computer Forensics Investigation Process

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

The digital forensic investigation process is both complex and delicate. The procedure needs to be carried out in a careful and controlled manner, and to achieve this, rigorous and expertly implemented steps need to be followed. Here at CCL, we take the investigation of computer forensics extremely seriously – not only due to our passion and skill within the industry, but also because we recognise the implications which our findings and results can have.

Due to the changing nature of crime and technology, it is crucial that our investigation processes remain in line with all developments. To ensure we stay on the forefront of such investigation, we employ full-time research and development analysts, whose sole job is to constantly push our techniques and methods forwards. Through thorough and dedicated research into creating and validating forensically sound tools and evaluating internal processes within the company, we are able to stay on the cutting-edge of the computer forensics industry.

As digital devices grow more complex, standard forensic tools may no longer hold the ability to extract the vital data which often proves so valuable within any type of Police investigation. Our continual advancements within both our own processes, and the techniques and technology which we use, mean that we are able to locate, extract, and preserve data which other methods may have failed to achieve.

You can see our latest advancements on our website, which includes the latest information on new and successful tools which we have been able to implement into our processes. Some examples of such technology include FLARE – our mobile phone intelligence analysis tool, and EPILOG – which is used to extract deleted and de-referenced data from SQLite databases.

Our experience within thousands of computer forensics investigations has enabled us to strengthen our exiting robust processes into a solid and highly reliable platform for forensically retrieving data. Due to the volatile nature of digital evidence, our examiners follow rigorous methods to ensure that the integrity of the data is not compromised in any way.

Let our specialist team of examiners and analysts take control of your computer forensics investigation, for the safest, most secure and most successful results. For more information on the processes which we use within digital forensics, contact our team today, who will be happy to help.

Cell Site Analysis in Criminal Investigations

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Tracking a person’s movement is a key process of many criminal investigations. If you can pinpoint the exact location of the suspect to a relevant location, the more success you are likely to have when the case comes to trial. One of the most effective tracking techniques is cell site analysis which is the process of locating the geographical area of a mobile phone (which is attributed to an individual) when calls or text messages are made or received. Here at CCL Forensics we are experts in this particular field and can use our equipment to apply this technology to historic call data from a mobile phone.

Each time a mobile phone is used it is documented and kept on record by the phone provider. Therefore, should a criminal use their phone just before, during or after they have committed a crime,  the police can request data from the phone company on which masts were used. They can then work with a cell site expert who can measure the signal from masts near the designated location to then narrow down exactly where the phone could have been used.

The information gathered and analysed by our team at CCL Forensics can be presented in court by one of our expert witnesses who have had consierdable experience in presenting this kind of case in a courtroom environment. This evidence can then either be used by the prosecution to prove that a suspect was in the area the crime was committed at a particular time, or by the defence to confirm an alibi.

Cell site analysis can also track the path of a mobile phone as it moves from one location to another. With our clear and concise mapping, the data we have gathered will be in an easy to understand summary format and ready to be presented in court.

With a service for cell site analysis that is tailored to your individual requirements, we at CCL Forensics can determine the movement of any mobile phone for which the data records can be obtained that can then be used in accordance with other evidence such as CCTV footage in a wide variety of criminal investigations.

Computer Evidence Collection and Preservation

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

If there is a file that the user doesn’t want anybody else to see but him or herself, they can hide it on their computer, add password protection, or even delete it. For this reason, many criminals choose to misuse their computer as part of their illegal activity. Whilst many may think they’re safe doing this, we at CCL Forensics, have become experts in extracting sensitive data which may seem untraceable. Using our experienced analysts and state of the art labs, we are able to collect vital computer evidence which may prove crucial to police investigations or other forms of investigatory work.

The internet is becoming an increasingly popular medium of communication, and with its wide availability and increasingly accessible nature, it is easier than ever before to transfer data such as images, videos and other files. This is resulting in a wide range of data being stored completely electronically using computers, eliminating the need for paper documents. An obvious benefit of this method of data storage is anonymity. Whist criminals may think they’re safe doing this however, they’re most certainly not. With our intricate knowledge and expertise, we are able to trace and gather any signs of computer evidence.

Sensitive electronic data can easily be damaged if not handled correctly, which is why it’s extremely important to call on highly trained professionals for such matters. With our help, you’ll be able to ensure that all data remains intact and in its original state, without being compromised or damaged. Once the data has been collected, we’ll keep it preserved, so it can be used appropriately as part of an investigation.

Safety of both data extraction and preservation is of utmost importance during the analysis of computer evidence. Be sure to enforce this by choosing a computer investigation company which you can trust. Contact us at CCL Forensics today for more information.

Computer Forensic Professionals

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

In this increasingly digital world, computers and mobile phones allow us to complete a range of processes wherever we are in the world, such as checking our bank balance, uploading photographs and chatting with our friends. Unfortunately, there are some individuals who illegally take advantage of this technology, using it to aid them in a variety of criminal activities. In criminal cases, it is vital that a computer forensic professional analyses digital data found on these devices, to help the police to maintain the chain of evidence between the device and those involved to the crime.

During the time that we at CCL Forensics have been established, we have witnessed computers and other technological devices being used to facilitate a number of illegal activities including fraud, identity theft, blackmail, drug dealing, assault, murder and terrorism.

In these instances, it is vital that professionals who are qualified in the field of computer forensics are brought in to identify data, to be used as evidence by law enforcement agencies as part of their investigations. In the corporate world, there are some companies who may think that their in-house IT team are able to recognise this illegal use. We would strongly recommend that they are not charged with this task as the integrity of the data could be damaged or at worst, lost completely.

Our team have worked hard to achieve ISO9001 and ISO27001 accreditation, which are international standards for quality and Information Security Management Systems. At present, we are also working towards ISO17025 and ISO14001 certification. Alongside our experienced staff and flexible services, we are confident that we will be able to achieve results no matter what the project. In short – if the data is there, they’ll find it.

Details about computer forensic services and how they can be used as part of criminal investigations can be found on our website. To discuss a project with a member of our team, in strict confidentiality, call the number on our website or enquire online by filling out our contact form.
